We all get Heartburn once in awhile. But many of us heartburn happens more often than we'd like to admit. Finding the elusive cure is paramount when the pain strikes and often it is the natural heartburn cures that have the longest lasting remedies for heartburn no more.

That chocolate bar we used to indulge in has lost its appeal knowing we will have to deal with the consequences afterward. Popcorn and soda pop at the movie theatre are slowly moving toward the "don't" list as well. As we get older, we are finding more and more things we can't enjoy and few ways to naturally assist with symptom relief. With that in mind, below you'll find several options to aid in controlling heartburn naturally. We don't have to let it have control.

Other than the obvious advantages of avoiding foods known to cause heartburn, you'll be happy to know there are other ways to help these symptoms. First of all, you'll want to keep a heartburn diary. Keep track of everything you ingest during the day and the times of each. Watch for your heartburn symptoms and you'll have a closer idea as to what is actually causing the problem. If food doesn't seem to be the main trigger, look at the stress factors in your life. Planning your only daughter's wedding alone? Not making the mortgage payment on time? Getting passed over for a promotion at work over and over again? These too can be triggers of increased acid production in your stomach. Decrease your stress and chances are your stomach will thank you.

If your stress level is fine, you can try 2 or 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz. of water before meals. This is said to raise the pH levels in your stomach, thus reducing the bad acid that causes heartburn symptoms. You might also try different organic herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, ginger or marshmallow. Organic herbal teas have been said to aid in digestion and heartburn relief.

Baking soda is another way to neutralize the effects of acid in your stomach. A simple teaspoon mixed in a glass of water can ease your pain. Be careful though, as the fizzy concoction may also make you burp and allow the passage of acid into the esophagus causing more pain.

You'll also want to sleep with your head at about a 30 degree angle of the bed. You can do this by using a wedge pillow or placing something under the legs at the head of your bed to elevate it. Lying flat causes the stomach to put unnecessary pressure on the esophageal sphincter, the opening from the esophagus to the stomach, thus creating a passageway for food and acid to go back up instead of staying down. Elevating your head several inches will help fix this problem. Don't forget to eat your last meal 2 to 3 hours prior to sleeping as well. You'll want to fully digest as much as you can before lying down, leaving less stomach content and acid production to disrupt your sleep.

You can visit your local health food store for more suggestions on avoiding and treating heartburn and if it persists or happens more than twice a week, a visit to your primary care providers' office is recommended. Further testing may be required to make sure there are no underlying problems that need to be addressed. There are many natural heartburn cures on the market for you to try, as well as the inexpensive treatments you may find already in your own home suggested here.

There are also excellent natural programs such as 'Heartburn No More.' There is no reason for you to suffer any longer.

Be careful with whatever you eat. Fried foods and fruit drinks like orange juice can cause heartburn. OTC antacids can help if used as recommended. Pizza, alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks, onions, etc can cause problems in baby boomers. This is natural; however, if you are young, maybe the source of your heart burns is your emotions.
      Good luck.

How can i get rid of heartburn without taking tums while pregnant?
I’ve been getting heartburn like crazy mainly at night time, but I can’t take tums cuz I feel like I get worse. Is there another way to prevent from having heartburn at night time?? Some people say a glass of coke works does it really?

    • Blaine Jackson says:

Coke is not a good idea. If you are getting reflux when you are in bed, try elevating the head of the bed around 30 degrees, this will help keep the acid in your stomach.

There are some foods that you should avoid, things like fatty or fired foods, tomatoes, spicy foods.

Try eating smaller meals more often and chew the food for much longer than you normally would, this will help it digest quicker.

Drink heaps of water during the day to ensure that you stay hydrated

How do I get rid of a heartburn/acidy feeling in my throat naturally?
I don’t usually get heartburn, but for the past 4 or 5 days, whenever I eat, I get a weird heartburn sensation that starts to creep up my throat. It’s worse when I lie down. I don’t like to take acid reducer since my friend told me your stomach just makes more acid to compensate later. Is that true? What’s the best way to get rid of heartburn naturally?

    • rowlfe says:

Sure, just a little sodium bicarbonate in water will do the trick and be all natural at the same time, just like salt is all natural. Sodium Bicarbonate is the active ingredient in over the counter things like Tums or Rolaids. It is a myth that acid neutralizers like which work on the existing stomach acid causes the stomach to make more. There are some hardcore acid reflux drugs that cause that compensation effect. Just a small amount out of that red and yellow box with the arm and hammer on the side that you let sit in the fridge to absorb odors is all you need. Sometimes, if I’ve been out for a late dinner and go to bed early, I will drink a glass of water with a teaspoon just before I retire so as to prevent too much acid. This is the problem that Alka-Seltzer (Plop plop fizz fizz Oh what a relief it is) used to promote in their commercials. I found simple bicarb works just as well and at a fraction of the cost. You only need a little, a level teaspoon or less in a glass of water. It will taste a little salty as it reacts with the acid in your saliva, which is nothing to worry about. And you will burp a bit as CO2 forms as the bicarb reacts with the stomach acid. Again, nothing to worry about.

    Heartburn?
I am a 15 years old boy, and I have a problem with my stomach. It feels like a bad hearburn after I ate something the night before, and it’s very uncomfortable, it lasts at least through the whole night.
This heartburn feeling comes about every few months, do you know why?

    • Barberry says:

Do you mean you eat at bedtime? It’s not good to eat within an hour of going to sleep because the increased acid in your stomach can give you problems when you lay down to sleep. Caffeine, chocolate can cause increased acid production too.

Are you drinking enough water with your meals? It’s important to clear your esophagus after having solids, especially if you tend to get heartburn. When you get that heartburn, sip on water to try to dilute the acid.

When you feel the heartburn coming on at night, take a Mylanta or Maalox and try sleeping up on 3 or 4 pillows, or elevate the head of your mattress on some pillows, or elevate the head of your bed on some blocks or books. That can help prevent the stomach acid from splashing up into your esophagus.

Some people have a weak valve at the top of their stomach. That allows acid to splash up into the esophagus, causing heartburn. That is known GERD. If you allow that to continue you could have problems with ulcer and even cancer of the esophagus. You should tell your doc about those symptoms so he/she can order something for you. At age 15 you need your tetanus booster, so when you go to the doc to get that, mention your heartburn. Good luck!

What causes heartburn, and why do some people get it and others do not?
    What causes heartburn?

And, how come some people get it but others do not? Even kids/teens get it, right? Not just adults.

    • Melissa P says:

heartburn is evil…it picks on some people, but not on others. i never had heartburn before. but near the end of m pregnancy…oh baby! it got so bad there were times i was ready to hit the ER becaue i couldn’t breathe, and the pain was so horrible!

there’s many causes for it, but mostly because of the way your body reacts with the acids in the food you eat. and caffeine agrivates it as well. spicy foods, citrus fruits, soda…and apparently pregnancy can cause it…and sometimes it’s so bad that water makes it worse!

kids and teens can get it, but i think it’s more common the older you get. i don’t know why, and wikipedia didn’t say. but there’s the link to all the scientific mumbo jumbo.

Is it normal to have get horrible heartburn several times a day and night while pregnant?
I’m 26 weeks pregnant and I know ofcourse heartburn is something that goes along with pregnancy but it feels like within the last week or so it has kicked into high gear. I’ve been getting it several times a day and night. I take tums to deal with it, but I’m getting a little nervous maybe I’m taking them more then I should. Is it normal to have it this much?

    • emmysmommy says:

Unfortunately heart burn is one of the normal NON-wonderful parts of pregnancy, the hormones that cause help ur baby grow also help froduce more acid, which inturn gives u more heartburn and gas, u don’t have to worry about taking tums they are safe, but, talk to your doctor, he can prescribe a liquid ant-acid, it lasts long and will help sooth ur heartburn quicker :) also try sleeping with ur pillow propped :) good luck :)

How come I frequently get heartburn after eating a turkey sandwich?
I’m 24 female and frequently get heartburn after eating homemade turkey sandwiches for lunch. Nothing crazy turkey, wheat bread, mayo. Most sites online say that is one of the best meals to eat to NOT get heartburn. Any explanation?

    • Blue Haired Old Lady says:

People are all different. If turkey sandwiches give you heartburn – don’t eat them. Also, you might try taking a Prilosec daily for a couple of weeks and see if that helps your problem.

How to pick good bed wedge for heartburn problems?
I am trying to buy a bed wedge which are supposedly good for easing heartburn. I’ve read that the minimum recommended elevation is 6-8 inches. The bed wedges come in 8, 10 and 12 inches elevation. It seems to me that the elevation should somehow depend on your height, but I am not sure. I am about 6 ft. Does anyone know which bed wedge is best? Thanks for any help!

    • jeffsmoola says:

Some great summaries of studies regarding bed wedges can be found at BedLift.com – See this:
” Using continuous monitoring of pH (acidity) within the esophagus among several alternative positions at rest, this randomized clinical trial detected a significant decrease in the time that the esophagus was exposed to highly acid conditions when using a foam wedge to elevate the head, and also showed a decrease in the time necessary for the acid to be cleared. Interestingly, use of a wedge-shaped mechanism was significantly more effective than elevation through the use of standard bed blocks.”

      and
” METHODS: The subject was placed supine on a standard hospital bed. The head of the bed was then elevated to 30 degrees according to 2 protocols: (1) supine for 10 minutes without leg elevation alternating with 10 minutes of side-lying, or (2) supine for 10 minutes with leg elevation at 10 degrees alternating with side-lying every 10 minutes. Body displacement and mean sacral interface pressures in both protocols were compared by using repeated measures analysis of variance.

RESULTS: The 30-degree head-up position with 10-degree leg elevation significantly reduced the amount of body displacement at the acromion compared with no elevation of the legs. There were no significant differences in mean sacral interface pressure in either position. C

CONCLUSION: Leg elevation at 10 degrees in the 30-degree head-up position was effective for reducing body displacement at the acromion; it was not effective for reducing sacral interface pressures.”
